New York Puerto Rican Community in Solidarity With Workers in Puerto Rico

From New York City, Frente Independentista Boricua (El Frente) sends a message of solidarity to the Puerto Rican people who are struggling and protesting in the streets right now, expressing their right to a dignified quality of life.

Today in Union Square, New York City, we march in solidarity with our people in Puerto Rico to say stop the abuse of workers and families.

"The people of Puerto Rico resist the dictatorship of La Junta imposed by Washington. A dictatorship that has, by its mere existence, unmasked a false democracy in the colony and is relentlessly vicious against the working class, whom it intends to bear the burden of paying an illegal and illegitimate debt generated by unscrupulous and corrupt politicians and Wall Street opportunists," said John Meléndez Rivera, Secretary General of the Nationalist Party, Junta de Nueva York, a member organization of El Frente.

For her part, Professor Ana López, from El Pais Posible and spokesperson for El Frente affirmed:

"For the past several weeks, Puerto Rican workers from all walks of life have taken to the streets in Puerto Rico to demand their rights. The people are fighting for education, healthcare, housing, the environment, the protection of all beaches from destruction and privatization, and the right of Puerto Ricans to live in Puerto Rico. It is also fighting against the old colonial policies and the new population displacement strategies that seek to force the departure of Puerto Ricans to hand over the country to millionaire tax evaders."

To conclude, Pedro Reyes, leader of Friends of Puerto Rico Initiative, and spokesperson for El Frente expressed, "In the struggle for their right to a dignified life, the Nation itself stands up. The Puerto Rican people have identified the colonialism as the enemy and already knows that such situation is at the center of all social ills. By identifying the colonial situation, it becomes easier for him/her to understand the garbage that must be removed in the path to building a new country".

The anti-colonial and pro-independence organizations, those organized within El Frente and the rest of our patriotic movement will always accompany the people in all their struggles, developing organizations and building spaces of convergence and unity to succeed in our primary mission of realizing an independent Puerto Rico
